How to Clean Hardwood Floors

It is important to know what is required of you when you wish to learn how to clean hardwood floors. Do take the time to sweep your floor regularly with soft-bristled broom, especially in hallways, near the main entrance and backdoor, and the kitchen, as these are the places where dirt is usually brought in from the outside.

Wood flooring, being a natural product, will absorb and expel moisture. This natural process will cause the flooring to expand and contract from season to season resulting in cracks or separation between some of the boards in your floor. Wood floors that are cared for properly should never have to be replaced. Most nicks and scratches can be fixed by replacing the finish on the wood, and spills can be cleaned easily with very little worry of staining.

We always come across several advices when it comes to a new purchase we make. It is rather very interesting to find out that people have such varied suggestions when it comes to the same kind of product. It is very wise of you not to listen to much of this free suggestions or hardwood floor cleaning tips from anybody or everybody. How to clean hardwood made floors is what we should right away get to know from the dealer himself at the time we make the purchase.

Never clean your floors with water- Using water on your nice new wood floor will have your floors on their way to destruction. The reason for this is because when wood gets wet, it swells up. This means that your floors will start to lift in different areas because of the swelling and will cause the wood to dent.

Do use mats at entrances of hardwood-floors to help prevent tracking in sand and salt and lessen the requirements for hardwood cleaning. The four main hard wood floor types that I have run into are sealed with urethane, oil-treated, varnished and laminated. For laminated flooring I clean them by dust-mopping then damp-mop. For the damp-mop I use liquid Spic and Span.

If you find that the floor has a "surface" finish, it will be quite easy to clean the floor. Sealants such as those that are based from urethane, polyacrylic, and similar substances can be cared for with basic cleaning like sweeping and mopping. It is not common to have to apply any type of wax or anything else when cleaning these types of surfaces. However, many may elect to use these to buff out areas that are exceptionally dirty.

There are two types of finishes: surface finishes and penetrating seals. Determining the type of seal will help you determine how to maintain your floors. Surface finishes include polyurethane (the most common), water based polyurethane (second most common), pre finished floors, and catalyzed. Penetrating seals includes oil finishes, acrylics and waxes. Surface finishes are usually shiny finishes and penetrating seals are generally satin or matte.

Mopping may be done using a dry or wet mop. Use of much water should be avoided while cleaning hardwood floors. Having carpet runners is a noble idea for high traffic areas. The filtration of dirt and scratching of the floor will be avoided. The next one will hurt high heel lovers. High heels and heavy shoes cause dents on the floor. At no one instance should dragging be allowed.
